Yet again I am blown away by your encouraging determination to take steps towards toxic free skin care! I love how this can be a place for us all to share our victories as we regain health and our inner glow by tending our skin in a gentle way. Thank you all for participating in the RMS Beauty Giveaway and a big congratulations to our winner Britanie! For those of you who didn't win, Rose-Marie is unable to offer a discount at this time due to the restraints of her current website (which is in the revamping process) however; she does offer free samples with every order and free shipping on orders over $30. Additionally, I just received news that she will be releasing a mascara this summer, thrilling!
Moving on, this week is the last in my skin care series; however, I am already looking forward to continueing the conversation of body care and sun protection so if you have any favorite clean products please let me know! For those of you just joining us do take a look-see at The Morning Hour and The Evening Swoon to learn more about my desire to nourish my skin in a non-toxic, sustainable way.
Today, I share with you my bedtime ease, how I unwind and wash the day away in preparation for a rejuvenating sleep. While my husband hurriedly readies himself for bed I enjoy a more leisurely nighttime ritual, one that helps me relax and soak away the woes of the day. I am naturally a night owl, an old habit I inherited from my mother that I desperately want to correct, so by bedtime my skin has been through many hours of makeup, sweat, oil, dirt and whatever else I have picked up throughout the day. With layers of unwanted grime and residue it is important that my skin is thoroughly cleansed and moisturized so that while I sleep my skin is able to rest, heal and breath.
Before I tend to my skin I make a drink of magnesium and a raw green powder which consists of every leafy green imaginable including kale, wheat grass, dandelion, healthful algaes, and plenty of probiotics and digestive enzymes to help restore my intestinal flora. The magnesium is an excellent sleep aid and anti-stress drink, perfect after a hectic day. I then turn off all the lights, unplug all appliances and chargers (I do not want any extra radiation while I sleep!) and make my way to a warm bath. Prior to my soak I dry brush my whole body, this is an excellent way to release toxins as the brushing encourages lymph drainage and increased blood flow. Dry brushing is also a natural exfoliator, removing dead skin cells, pesky bumps and preventing those nasty ingrown hairs. If you are new to the concept of dry brushing please check out this article for more detailed benefits and how-to.
After my invigorating brush I fill the tub with Dead Sea salts, yet another way to relieve tension, aches and pull toxins from the body. I will also add a dash of lavender essential oil to help calm my mind and senses. I slip into the warm abyss and my most anticipating ritual of the day officially begins. So without further ado I give you...
My nightly cleansing routine is devoted to my friend May Lindstrom. Though we have never actually met, we have exchanged enough emails for me to know that she is my West Coast kindred spirit. Many of her values and dreams align with those of my own heart, so I find this line touches me on a more personal level because May has become an treasured friend and inspiration. A model, momma and self proclaimed skin chef, May is just as lovely on the inside as she is breathtakingly beautiful on the outside. After struggling with the damaging effects of the not so clean Los Angeles air May sought out to create a line that would heal her own sensitive skin but what originally had been a personal quest turned into a breakthrough in pure and natural skin care for women all over the world. Every skin type can benefit from May's uniquely cocktailed products. Each jar, pot and bottle is lovingly concocted in her home studio by her very own fair hand. All products receive equal amounts of meticulous attention and care, beautifully packaged in recyclable dark Miron glass, protecting the longevity and potency of her creations. This is so important because not one of her products contain preservatives or fillers!
My favorite treasure of May’s is her Clean Dirt, a unique blend of exotic clays, salts and the most delicious smelling spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and cocoa. She instructs to pour some in your palm and add a few drops of water to form a paste, but I find my clumsy hands make too much of a mess. Instead, I pour my “dirt” into May’s beautifully custom made, ceramic bowl, mix it with some pure rose water and use her angled brush to apply, similar to a mask. I leave the mixture on for about 2-3 minutes and then gently scrub with warm water. It is the most unusual face wash I have ever used, but I must tell you it is the only thing that truly removes all traces of makeup and the small salt granules gently exfoliate leaving me with baby smooth skin. One thing I have drastically noticed when using her Clean Dirt (as well as her Problem Solver) is that the clays help reduce any traces of puffiness or water retention.
To follow my delicious cleanse I swipe some fresh rosewater across my face then I slather my prepped skin with her Youth Dew, a luxurious face oil that absorbs quickly into the skin and nourishes every pore. Do not fear facial oils, I have found they greatly balance my skin and calm down any hormonal ”spots” I may have at the time. May’s Youth Dew is packed with 20 regenerating plant and botanical oils such as sea buckthorn, kukui nut, sweet orange, neroli and meadowfoam seed along with CoEnzyme Q10, an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals. After a night with the “dew” I wake with the softest most hydrated skin.
Once a week for a special indulgence I slather May’s Problem Solver all over my face using her angled brush and allow it’s magic to take hold of every pore while I rest in the warm, salty bath letting my body relax and let go of the busy week. Ladies (and Gents!) this is one of the most amazing masks my skin has ever seen. A blend of antioxidant-rich raw cacao, bamboo charcoal, sea salts and clays pull every impurity out of the skin while warming spices such as cayenne and cinnamon bring a mild heat leaving you with a youthful flush. When I remove the mask any spot or problem area is dramatically diminished.
After my soak, while my skin is still damp I treat myself to May’s golden elixir,
. Deemed the “sunshine radiance oil” the Good Stuff actually contains translucent golden minerals that give the skin a subtle, luminous glow. Rich in jojoba, macadamia, olive, cacao and sea buckthorn oil this will leave every square inch of your body super smooth and you will smell divine. My husband, who never notices when I have a new perfume, is always commenting on how good I smell when I slip this on, and May calls this her
Because this is such a treat I only use it a couple times of week, and when I do my parched skin is immediately transformed and happy.
Can you share with us your philosophy and how May Lindstrom Skin was born:
I believe our skin has the ability to heal itself if we let it. It is our responsibility to provide abundant nutrition and hydration and to be gentle in our care. By limiting our exposure to harsh chemicals and extreme treatments, we open up to gentler methods. I build each of my products on the same philosophy and ingredients that have been treasured and shared by women all over the world since the beginning of time. I trust in earth's bounty and the wisdom of those who came before me.
This line was born out of a desire to create blissful bookends in my day, a time-out morning and night that was just for me. Having formulated for years out of necessity (I am blessed with highly sensitive and chemically reactive skin), I yearned to create something that was simply luxurious and lovely. My foundation in purity and simplicity is solid, but it was time for me to embrace playfulness and beauty in my potions. I wanted to feel something when I picked up a bottle and entered my cleansing ritual. I wanted to feel peace, joy and celebration all in that one moment. And I wanted to share that with every woman I loved and cared about so she could feel this too. I invite you to create the time and space for the personal connection you deserve with yourself. This action alone will transform you.
What does your bedtime ease entail:
At bedtime, I bathe with my darling baby girl. She is not yet eight months old, so she straddles my belly and discovers the joy of splashing as I recline in the tub. I wash all her sweet parts with just a soft cloth and water. When she has bored of the water, I let her play naked on a towel next to the bath while I gently exfoliate with The Clean Dirt. I allow it to sit for a few minutes so all the herbs and spices can work there magic as I cleanse and condition my hair. I currently alternate hair products by Alaffia and John Masters. I try to remember to dry brush before the bath, but often forget. If I have forgotten, I scrub my whole body quickly and vigorously with textured gloves and Dr.Bronner's Rose castile soap. After rinsing and before I exit the tub, I massage two pumps of The Youth Dew over my face, neck and décolleté. From chest to toes, I smooth on a palmful of The Good Stuff, sending myself to bed soft and delicately aromatic with seductive cocoa, rose, French lavender and ylang-ylang. My little one gets her massage with pure coconut oil and a smothering of kisses. Twice a week, I hand over my daughter to her papa and I stay longer in my bathroom retreat, indulging in The Problem Solver treatment masque to keep my skin smooth, clear and glowing.
How does diet and exercise play a role in your daily routine:
I wish I could claim that exercise played a steady role. Quite honestly, it is not something I have ever made consistent time for. I try to take regular walks with my yellow lab and baby girl, but I will admit it's not nearly as often as we would all like.
For me, diet is absolutely key to beauty and welll-being/feeling. I eat very well and am a lover of good food. I subscribe to two different CSAs and love having these mystery boxes of super fresh fruits and vegetables show up on my doorstep. Living in California, I am very blessed with incredible access to the best farm-fresh goodies year round. It inspires me to cook gorgeous food that feeds both my soul and my family's bellies. I believe in eating the rainbow, choosing the most vibrantly colored produce you can find and mixing up your meals regularly for nutritional variety. I incorporate tons of whole unprocessed grains and every type of legume I can get my hands on. I generally follow a plant based diet, with very occasional fish.
What is the most common mistake women make when it comes to skin care:
Skincare does not have to be complicated. Most of my clients come to me with skin that is simply exhausted, devoid of its own light and luster. We train our skin to depend on product to regulate moisture levels, to dry up our acne, to perform minor miracles on wrinkles and spots... the truth is that there is not a magic bullet you can find in a bottle. The magic happens when we embrace our skin's natural rhythm and create the space to care for our whole selves, inside and out.
May Lindstrom’s line is nothing short of a revolutionary take on natural skin care. She sought out only the most unique and healing ingredients, discovering along the way that her own road to well-nourished skin can help women all over the world. What makes me love her line even more is her sweet, child-like spirit. The kindness and generosity she has shown myself has left me so grateful. The fact that she hand blended her products one day, shipped them to me the next was astounding....just think how long mainstream brands sit on store shelves and the preservatives that they must contain to keep such a long shelf life. I find May’s products a worthy investment that not only can care for my skin but my whole body. I have no doubt that you too will find May to be an instant inspiration!
